RU Peer Service Leaders Program
RU Peer Service Leaders is a new program offered by theCenter for Community Engagement designed to more effectively bridge the RU campus with the Radford, New River Valley and Southwest Virginia communities. The students who serve as Peer Service Leaders (PSLs) will facilitate RU student involvement in these communities, providing a rich learning experience for students while also assisting these communities in some of the challenges and opportunities facing them. In this initial year, four students will be selected as PSLs, each assigned to a particular community topic – environmental responsibility, hunger relief & local foods, social justice, or special populations (youth, elderly, disabled, etc.). Major PSL responsibilities include: organizing and leading service, volunteer and/or experiential learning outings and activities; promoting service-learning and volunteerism to the campus community; and facilitating discussions and activities around service experiences. This program will help RU students: develop greater social and civic responsibility; develop greater awareness of social and environmental issues; and meet others interested in service, local communities, social justice, and environmental responsibility.
